I have been exploring the third party tools on Flickr- so far not very impressed, maybe it's a temporary thing- I will try again. Are you allowed to criticise any technologies on Web 2.0?
Initially Mappr only displayed one image and then later only images from route 66, regardless of my location. The montager only showed one image as well. I searched with general terms such as 'art' and 'beach' but still only one displayed. ColrPickr worked well- although I don't think I'll ever use it.
I created a trading card that looks OK. I did try to email it to myself but I could not find a 'send' button, just an enter your details screen.
I can see some of the applications might be valuable but overall I think the majority of them are just toys -and whats wrong with toys? Nothing but like a lot of toys, they get replaced quickly by a new toy, and then another... I think people are often just filling in time' playing with them- rather than learning anything substantial or lasting from them.
I can see technlogy allows us to do these things but I do doubt we need these things- or even want them. We use them because they are there, like bad television. I am only talking about the 'toys' here rather than the online banking, meta search engines or RSSFeeds, technology that has a genuine use in the world. What is useful can be very subjective, but I have the feeling that they are flashing neon- they want you to come too much, that really they might be afraid if they didn't have all the bling that nobody would come at all....because nobody really needs what they are offering.
